Islamorada isn't called the "Sportfishing Capital of the World" for nothing. Our waters are teeming with fish, and each season brings its own special catches. Right now, we're seeing a lot of action with snapper – they're biting like crazy and make for some delicious eating if you decide to keep your catch. Barracuda are always a favorite, with their impressive speed and toothy grins. And for those looking for a real challenge, the blacktip sharks have been putting up quite a fight lately. Remember, fishing is always an adventure, and while we can't guarantee what you'll catch, we can promise an exciting time trying!
Barracuda: These sleek predators are the speed demons of the sea. With their long, cylindrical bodies and powerful jaws lined with razor-sharp teeth, barracuda are a thrill to catch. They're known for their lightning-fast strikes and acrobatic jumps when hooked. Barracuda can be found year-round in Islamorada, but they're especially active in the warmer months. When one of these hits your line, hold on tight – you're in for a wild ride!
Red Porgy: Don't let their pretty pink color fool you – these fish put up a great fight for their size. Also known as pink snapper, red porgy are a favorite among anglers for their tasty white meat. They typically hang out near the bottom around reefs and wrecks, so we'll be dropping our lines deep to find them. Spring and early summer are prime times for porgy fishing, and their strong pulls will give kids and adults alike a run for their money.
Blacktip Shark: For many, hooking into a shark is the ultimate fishing experience, and blacktips deliver big time. These swift swimmers are known for their distinctive black-tipped fins and can grow up to 6 feet long. Blacktips are most common in our waters during the warmer months, and they love to chase bait fish near the surface. When you hook one, be prepared for a battle – these sharks are known for their endurance and will test your stamina as an angler. It's catch-and-release for these beauties, but the photos and memories will last a lifetime.
There's something special about fishing in Islamorada that keeps folks coming back year after year. Maybe it's the crystal-clear waters that let you spot fish before they even bite. Or perhaps it's the variety – where else can you catch a snapper one minute and be reeling in a shark the next? But if you ask me, it's the laid-back vibe and the thrill of never knowing what you might catch that makes these trips so addictive. Plus, with Captain Regina at the helm, you're not just going fishing; you're getting an insider's tour of some of the best spots in the Florida Keys.

Barracudas are some of the fastest fish in our waters, hitting speeds up to 35 mph when they're after prey. They're long, torpedo-shaped predators with a mouthful of sharp teeth - definitely a sight to see. Most 'cudas we catch are 2-3 feet long, but the big ones can stretch to 6 feet. You'll find them hanging around reefs, wrecks, and coastal waters, hunting by sight for smaller fish. They're attracted to shiny, flashy lures, so we use a lot of topwater plugs and spoons. Summer's the best time to target them, when the water's warmest. Barracuda put up an exciting fight, often leaping out of the water. One local trick: retrieve your lure fast and erratically to trigger their predatory instincts. Just watch those teeth when you're unhooking them!

Blacktip sharks are some of the most exciting catches in these waters. They usually run about 5 feet long, but can get up to 9 feet. You'll spot 'em by the black tips on their fins. These sharks like warm, shallow coastal waters - we often find them patrolling around artificial reefs and in bays. They're known for their acrobatics, sometimes leaping clear out of the water when hooked. Summer's the best time to target blacktips, when they're most active. We use heavy braided line and circle hooks to handle their power. For bait, oily fish like mackerel or sardines work well. Here's a pro tip: chum the water to get them interested, then float out a live bait. The fight these sharks put up is incredible - it's a real rush, especially for first-timers. Just remember, we practice catch and release to keep the population healthy.

Red Porgy, also called Pink Snapper by some folks, are a tasty catch you'll find around here. They're usually about a foot long, with a pinkish-silver color and sharp dorsal spines. These guys like to hang out near rocky bottoms and reefs, typically in waters 100-300 feet deep. Spring and fall are prime seasons for porgy fishing. They're not the biggest fighters, but they make up for it with their excellent table fare - tender, white, flaky meat that's great for grilling or frying. When you're after porgy, try using small hooks with pieces of squid or cut bait. A little trick I've learned: if you're having trouble getting bites, try downsizing your bait and using a longer leader. These fish can be a bit shy, so sometimes finesse is key to getting them on the hook.
